FSSAI License and Registration is required for any food business in India that manufactures, stores, transports, or distributes food. As per Section 31(1) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, every Food Business Operator (FBO) must be licensed under FSSAI. This is governed by the Food Safety & Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Business) Regulations, 2011.
Eligibility is based on turnover and production capacity. Refer to the table below:

Required for petty FBOs with annual turnover less than Rs. 12 lakh. Registration is granted with a 14-digit number starting with 2.
Mandatory for FBOs with turnover over Rs. 12 lakh.

Issued for 1 to 5 years. Renewal must be applied for 30 days before expiry.
Operating without a valid license may lead to up to 6 months imprisonment and a fine of up to Rs. 5 lakh.
